The Default Mode of Human Cognition

The Default Mode of Human Cognition
摘要
Since its discovery as a set of brain regions that showed profound deactivations in goal-oriented tasks as well as strongly coupled brain activity dynamics at rest, mounting evidence on the “default mode” brain network has long raised a puzzling question: Is there a default mode of brain function? In addition to being associated with a range of internal mentation processes such as mind-wandering, creativity and self-consciousness, its perseverance across the mammalian species and ubiquitous alterations in a variety of mental health disorders point towards a fundamental role for this brain network in human cognition. In this talk, I will present recent work highlighting the contribution of the default mode network to our ability to employ learned models of the world around us in order to provide efficient and adaptive responses to environmental demands. As such, I will argue that the primary functional role for this network might be to seamlessly drive a series of automated thoughts, decisions and actions that govern our daily lives, which may have important implications for our current understanding of a healthy and adaptive brain function.
